Description

Attractive 18th century hand-colored engraved map of New England from America's greatest early mapmaker, Cyprian Southack.

The map includes an inset of Boston Harbor in the upper left corner. It includes New York City, Long Island, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, Cape Cod, Boston, the coast of Maine, Nova Scotia to Cape Breton.

The map is based on Southack's unobtainable The New England coasting pilot (circa 1729), which included a massive 8-sheet plan of New England from Sandy Hook to Nova Scotia. This iteration was included in editions of Mount & Page's The English Pilot, The Fourth Book, from 1732 until 1760. The present second state, lacking the date below the title, was issued after 1745.

Mount & Page's The English Pilot, The Fourth Book, was the published for over a century and defined American sea chart compilations until the mid-18th century.

Southack (1662-1745) was one the foremost early mapmakers in America. His most famous map was the first map engraved on copper in the American colonies, A New Chart of the English Empire in North America (1717). That map is completely unobtainable.
