Description

Rare early world map and portrait of Sir Thomas Cavendish, with a Latin poem below.

Half length portrait of Thomas Cavendish (1560-92), holding a globe and measuring instrument; in oval frame with parapet. Published as an illustration to the Heroologia Anglica.

Cavendish was the first person to set out with the intention of circumnavigating the globe, leaving in 1586, to emulate Drake's successes in plundering the Spanish colonies in the Pacific. Having captured more plunder than he could carry he returned to a hero's welcome in England in 1588 and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I.

The map shows a reduced size copy of the Jodocus Hondius-Francis Drake World map ( Vera Totius Expeditionis Nauticae) at the bottom, which was first engraved by Hondius in Amsterdam, circa 1595. The two portraits (the other being a portrait of Sir Francis Drake) are nearly identical to the two portraits by Jodocus Hondius that were pasted onto the verso of the Drake world map.

An exceptional rarity--Not in Shirley.
