Description

Broadside real estate map promoting a land auction of lots in Berkeley, California.

The neighborhood depicted in the map has been rendered less recognizable by the renaming of the streets. The map covers an area bounded by Russell Street in the south, "State University Homestead No. 5." in the east, Eddy Street in the north, and the California and Nevada Railroad in the west. Today the map covers part of South Berkeley.

The advertisement in the lower left encourages people to visit the area:

Special Trains! Free trips to the Mathews Tract previous to the Great Auction Sale of October 29 of Berkeley Lots Giving a splendid opportunity to the public to examine this magnificent location without charge.
The California & Nevada R. R.
Will run special trains, leaving San Pablo Avenue at the terminus of the Cable Road, at 1, 2, 3, and 4 o'clock P.M., on Thursday and Friday, October 27 and 28, and 10, 11, and 12 o'clock A.M. Saturday, October 29, the day of sale. Round trip tickets over both roads can be had on application at the office salesroom of Woodward & Gamble, 902 Broadway, Oakland.

Most of the lots are 40 feet wide, with 30 lots to each full block.

Peter Mathews was one of the early landowners in Berkeley and the tract derives its name from his.
