Description

A Monumental 17th Century View of Prague

Superbly hand-colored example of Hollar's highly important view of Prague, from Merian's Topographia Bohemiae, Moraviae et Silesiae.

The view is captured from Petrin (Mount St. Lawrence).

Hollar's view is among the great 17th century views of the city, and certainly the best from Topographia Bohemiae.

The Charles Bridge is shown at the Center of the map, the Prague Castle on the near side of the river at the left.

Prague was Hollar's birthplace. The view is embellished with 6 coats of arms.

The view is created from 3 separate copper plates, which have been joined.

The key at the bottom is given in three different languages -- Czech, Latin, and German -- and names 20 locations of interest around the city.

Condition Description
On three sheets joined.
