Description

Rare pre-Chicago Fire imprint map of Iowa, published by Rufus Blanchard and lithographed by Charles Shubert in Chicago.

The map is hand colored by counties and shows Railroads, townships, rivers, the Omaha Reservation.

After the Chicago Fire, Blanchard relocated his shop from Lake Street to nearby Clark Street, and in 1872 began a new series of pocket maps, advertised by him as "Maps in flexible cases with price redced." The new series included an entirely new map of Iowa.

We locate a single example at the Boston Athenaeum.

The map is very rare on the market.
