Rare German Sea Chart of the area around Hong Kong, Macao and Canton.
Nice example of Heinrich Berghaus's rare sea chart of part of the coast of Southern China, which appeared in his Atlas von Asia in 1834.
A striking, rare and attractive large-scale early 19th century chart of the mouth of the Pearl River focusing on the region around present-day Macao and Hong Kong.
The top left of the engraving is filled with a detailed plan of Macau, surrounded by smaller engravings of Tiger Island, the Bocca Tigris, and a profile of Macau. The famous view of Luis de Camoens' Grotto has detailed annotations and description.
A detailed inset in the lower center shows Bias Bay (now known as Daya Wan or Daya Bay) north of Mirs Bay (Tai Pang Wan). Hong Kong is well detailed and named and Tai Tam Bay (Tai Tam Wan) identified. Lantau Island and Lamma Island are also well detailed.
Rarity
The map is quite rare. We note only a single example on the market (Roderick Barron, Catalog 33, 1998). OCLC locates only the copy in the British and Library, and a complete copy of the Atlas in the Munich University Library. The Library of Congress and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Library copies are also noted on line.
