Rare Separately Issued First State of Colton's Map of Minnesota Territory

Fine separately issued example of the first state Colton's Map of Minnesota Territory, which extends to the Missouri River.

Unlike the atlas version of the map, this map includes a copyright date of 1854 and significantly different features in the west.

Massive Pembina County and Yankton Countgry dominate the western 2/3rds of the map. Only a hand full of counties appear in Minnesota north of the Mississippi River.

The map shows many Indian Tribes, villages and other early notes are shown, along with early towns and roads. Only a small portion of Minnesota has been surveyed.

This pocket map version includes the date (1855), unlike the atlas edition of the map.  It pre-dates the inclusion of the proposed route of the Northern Pacific Railroad and much of the topographical details in the northwestern part of the future Dakota Territory, which are added in the first state of the atlas map.  The Northwest Territory is noted to the west, unlike the later editions, which reference Nebraska Territory.

Condition Description: Pocket map in original cloth covers.
