Description

Early manuscript map of Connecticut, drawn in Connecticut.

The cartography of the map dates roughly from the early 1790s, and indeed the author probably had access only to printed or manuscript material from that time. The map bears some similarities to Mathew Carey's 1795 map of Connecticut. It was drawn around the same time that the Warren & Gillet map was printed.

The wove paper on which the map is drawn is watermarked: "TA&B" Bidwell attributes that watermark to the paper mill of partners John Taintor, Charles Taintor, George Abbe, and Edmund Badger Jr., on the basis of the Taintor papers at the Connecticut Historical Society. This partnership built and operated a windmill at Windham starting in 1810, and ceased operating together at some point in the middle of that decade. See, Bidwell, American Paper Mills, 1690-1832.

Overall this is an attractive folk art map. The border is only drawn on the top and left sides, leaving open the possibility that the map was unfinished.
