Description

Rare map of the Aruacano Administrative Department of Chile, published to illustrate the travel accounto of Giuseppe Sallusti.

The present map is based upon Juan Ignacio Molina's map of the same title, published in 1795. The original map extended only to 34.5 degrees north and did not include the small inset showing the Tierra del Fuego region.

This enlarged map, which was issued in about 1827 (based upon catalog entry at the Bibliotheque National de France), covers a wider region, although the two insets are given on smaller scale than the main part of the map.

In his account, Sallusti describes his trip from Rome to Chile, with chapters dedicated to the city of Buenos Aires, Mendoza, Santiago De Chile, Montevideo, customs of the south american Indians and the situation of the catholic missions in Chile.
