Fine example of this rare pictorial map of the Gold Regions of California, "Drawn in Broken English by Jolly Lindgren."

In the compass is a note saying, "This Map is Cockeyed But This Is Correct I Betcha." This comic pictorial map is full of puns and comic vignettes related to the Gold Regions.

The map extends from Lake Tahoe, Nevada City and Marysville in the north to Wawona, Mariposa and Merced in the South.

The whimsical nature of the map includes

  • "An Ass Covered With Gold Has More Respect Than A Horse With a Pack Saddle"
  • "No Dust Affects The Eyes So Much As Gold Dust"
  • an image of a woman at the bottom right (Gold Digger 1949 Model)
  • a reference to Brett Hart
  • Jackass Hill--Site of the Mark Twain Cabin
  • the location of the Chinses Tong War at Waterford

The Lindgren Brothers issued a number of other silly whimsical maps of national parks and other parts of the West. This Mother Lode map is one of the last of the series and one of the rarest.
