Description

Birdseye view of Modesto, California, on the verso of a rare promotional brochure, promoting the "Queen City of the Plains."

The Tuoloumne River is shown on the south side of town, with the railroad line in the foreground and the Stanislaus River to the north. E.B. Beard's Modesto Colony, Granger's Addition and Maze & Abbott's Additions are shown, along with street names.

The view identifies 23 important the court house, Brooklyn Hotel, Public School, Churches (2 of 8), Stable and other businesses. gardens and residences around town and includes extensive promotional text on the front and verso.

The view is a photo-lithographic image of what we surmise is a larger view, of which no known surviving example exists. The example we have is identical to the only recorded example, located at the California State Library.
