Description

Scarce map of the Great Lakes, Upper Mississippi and Hudson's Bay Company Lands, published at the beginning of the American Revolution.

Centered on Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, the map identifies and number of the Western Forts, both French & English.

The source of the Mississippi is tracked north to L. Missisagan or Buade (Lake of the Woods). One of the major southern tributaries of the Mississippi River is the Moingona River. The Moingona or Moingwena Indians were close allies of or perhaps part of the Peoria. They were assimilated by that tribe and lost their separate identity about 1700. The name "Moingona" was probably the basis for the name of the City of Des Moines, the Des Moines River, and Des Moines County, Iowa.
