Description

Fascinating Calligraphic illustration of General George Washington, engraved by John L. Donlevy of New York.

Calligraphic illustrations were used by engravers to demonstrate their skill (cf. Tyler print above). The present work by Donlevy, who describes himself as a "Intaglio-chromographic and Electrographic Engraver," used his engraving and calligraphic skill to make this memorial image of Washington based on Stuart's "Athenaeum" painting.

The face of Washington is based on Stuart's "Lansdowne" portrait, the rest of the bust is comprised of engraved swirls and flourishes. The lettering is executed in the typical variety of styles. This is the first state of print (of two), published in 1838.
