Description

Interesting revised edition of De Vaugondy's map, the first edition to name the United States (Les Etats Unis) in the title.

The map shows the newly formed United States at the conclusions of the Revolutionary War. The map also includes a large inset map of California and the NW Coast of America, and a very unusual projection of the West Coast.

The region east of the Appalachians has been revised and is no longer referred to as Chouanous et Cheraquis, as in prior editions of the map. Extensive notes on the Mississippi Valley Indians, French and English forts and other details. The River systems running west from the Mississippi are also of note, along with the Belle Riviere, which seems to extend from Southern Kansas or Northern Oklahoma to the west, quite uniquely and mythically so.

The large inset of the west coast is also of great note for its cartographic anomalies, especially for collectors of the Sea and Rivers of the West and the NW Passage. Minor abrasion at lower neatline, else a nice example of this increasingly scare map. This is the last of the five states and the only edition to show and name the United States.

Gilles Robert de Vaugondy Biography

Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766) was the head of a leading family of geographers in eighteenth century France. Gilles got his start when he jointly inherited the shop of Pierre-Moullart Sanson, grandson of the famous geographer Nicholas Sanson. The inheritance included the business, its stock of plates, and a roller press. In 1760 Gilles became geographer to King Louis XV. His son, Didier Robert de Vaugondy (ca. 1723-1786), was also a geographer and the two worked together. They were known for their exactitude and depth of research. In 1757, they produced the Atlas Universel, considered an authority for many years.
