Description

Unrecorded Political Satire Letter Sheet, showing the Theater of War in the Mid-Atlantic Region, from Baltimore and Harper's Ferry to Norfolk, Virginia, with a number of vignettes on the verso, satirizing the Confederate States and their leadership.

The satirical vignettes were each printed as envelope covers during the Civil War.

The map covers the region from Havre de Grace, Maryland south to Petersburg and Norfolk, Virginia. It shows the principal towns along with rail lines, courthouses, and other details. Above the map image are the portraits of Commanders Stringham and Foote.

The same satirical vignettes would be re-issued in by Wells in 1863, with a chronological history of the war and again in1865 by Matson & Co. in Cleveland, on a larger sheet, surrounded by 28 Portraits.
