Description

Nice example of the map of the Battle of White Plains, which appeared in a French edition of Marshall's work on the Life of George Washington.

Interesting Revolutionary War battle map of the New York City and vicinity, from a French edition of John Marshall's Atlas to Marshall's Life of Washington.

The map includes the positions of the British and American Armies, along with other details.

John Marshall, who first served in the Culpeper Minute Men during the American Revolution, before embarking on a distinguished career as a politician, ambassador, and ultimately the Chief Justice of the United States. Marshall's father Thomas had been a close friend of George Washington, dating back to the French & Indian War. It was during his time as Chief Justice that Marshall was asked by Washington's nephew Bushrod Washington to write the Official Biography of Washington's life, which would be published in America, England and France for the next several decades.
