Description

First edition of this extremely rare sea chart of the southwestern coast of Jutland, including parts of Denmark and Germany, first published circa 1670, by Caspar Lootsman.

The present chart was engraved and issued by Caspar Lootsman in Amsterdam, before the plate was later passed on to Hendrik Doncker, who issued an edition of the map circa 1686.

The Jacobsz/Lootsman family began with father Anthonie Jacobsz, who along with Willem Blaeu and Arnold Colom, were the most famous sea chart makers in Holland, in the first part of the 17th Century. After Anthonie's death in 1643, Jacobsz' widow continued the business, before passing along the business to her sons Caspar (born 1635) and Jacob, when the sons became of age. Once the sons took over, they quickly changed their names to Lootsman, to avoid confusion with the father.

We locate only 1 example of this edition of the map, in the Danish National Library.
