Description

Rare 19th Century map of Europe printed in Athens in a Turkish dialect.

This strange map uses a dialect of Turkish employed by the Karamanli Orthodox Christians during the Ottoman Empire. The lettering used is Greek, contrasting with the Arabic used by the rest of the empire.

The name for Greece in the map is  ΓΙΟΥΝΑΝΙΣΤΑΝ, "Yunanistan," the Turkish name for Greece. All other toponyms are similarly Turksih.

Dionysios Pyrros's Atlas neoteros (1845) and Athanasios A. Sakellarios's A tlas geographikos (1870).
