Description

Rare separately issued map of Pugent Sound and the so-called Gray's Harbor Country, published in Tacoma by Lowman & Hanford and printed by Britton & Rey in San Francisco.

The map extends from the Fraser River in the north to the mouth of the Columbia River in the south, reaching Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Adams. The map reflects the results of the early township surveys being conducted by the Government Land Office, although many areas are not yet surveyed or divided into sections.

The map reflects the detailed topographical knowledge in the surveyed parts but relaitvely little in other unsurveyed areas.

The map identifies a number of the early operating and proposed railroads in the region, including:

  • Yakima & Pacific Coast RR
  • Union Pacific RR
  • Northern Pacific RR
  • Tacoma Southern RR
  • Tacoma & Olympia RR
  • Satsop RR
  • Canadian Pacific RR
  • Seattle & Montana RR
  • Victoria, Port Crescent & Chehalis RR

The Proposed Olympia National Park is shown, along with Indian Reservations, mining regions and a host of other details.

One of the best commercial maps of the period and one of the rarest. We note no examples of the map at auction or in dealer catalogues and only a single Amerine map at auction in the past 50 years

(Streeter, 1969--M ap of Washington With Adjacent Parts of British Columbia, Montana and Idaho. Compiled & Copyrighted by C. H. Amerine Spokane Falls, W. T. 1888).
