Description

Fascinating late Soviet Wall Wall map of the Western Hemisphere, identifying the distribution of plant, animal, reptile and fish types around the the hemisphere, based upon regional classifications.

This large and curious map represents the western half of the wall map Karta Rasteniy i Zhivotniiy (Map of Plants and Animals), published in Moscow in 1980 by the Main Office for Geodesy & Cartography of the Soviet Ministry, which was the USSR's central government printing office for civilian publications.

It shows all of the Americas and, far across the Pacific Ocean, New Zealand. Corresponding the the key below the map, it shows the landmasses divided into 5 biozones: Tundra, Taiga, Forest, Plains and Desert. The different types of fauna indigenous to the each zone are expressed pictorially on the map, while large whales inhabit the oceans.

The map, which originally comprised two halves convering the entire World, was produced by the Soviet Government for use in schools, in order to educate students on the wildlife of far off lands that at the time they were essentially forbidden from visiting.

A grand and unusual example of late Soviet printing and educational pedagogical material.
