Description

Fine original artist's board, showing a working draft of Stepnen Voorhies historic map of Nassau County.

The map identifies a number of towns, as well as the Grave of Theodore Roosevelt, Old Paper Mill, Onderdonk Grist Mill, Roosevelet Field, Mitchell Field, Mineola Court House, Adelphi College, Garden City Hotel, Nassau County YWCA, St. Georges Church and Rock Hall.

A reduced size photo-reproduction of the map was likely used to illustrated Recipes from Historic Long Island, published in 1948, but we otherwise find no other citations to the map's existence.

Voorhies lived in Rockville Center and Long Island was one of his favorite subjects. After serving in the Navy, Stephen Voorhies attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, graduating in 1922. He resided in Rockville Centre, Long Island, and maintained a studio at 303 West 42nd Street in Manhattan, becoming prolific artist, map-maker and illustrator.
