Description

Fine example of Gray's map of the region from Southern California to the area around El Paso, Texas, the final documentation of the boundary between the United States and Mexico. This  ended a saga of disputes and incursions that date back to Louisiana Purchase and Spain's control of Mexico.

Following the resolution of the war with Mexico, the first Boundary Commission, under the guidance of Nicholas P. Trist, used a map of Mexico published by John Disturnell in negotiating the treaty. Differences soon arose with the treaty regarding the actual depiction on Disturnell's map of the Rio Grande and El Paso. The lands in question were particularly important to the prospective railroad route to California and its newly discovered gold mines. Once it became clear to the commissioners that the treaty description did not accuratey depict the US intentions, a new set of negotiations resulted, which led to the US's purchase of additional lands in 1854, under the auspices of the Gadsden Territory.
