Description

This rare map is one of 4 maps of the continents, all engraved on a trapezoidal projection. Published in Naples, the book is dedicated to Ferrante Carafa, Count of Soriano. The work consists of a series of treatises describing the cosmography of the four parts of the World, with the final section discussing the New World. The work is not recorded in most of the standard bibliographies apart from Minieri Riccio; only the 1576 edition is recorded in the British Library. The four folding maps represent Europe, Asia, Africa and America. Noteworthy in the text are many of the earliest known references in print to regions, peoples, and cities of Africa, Asia and the Americas.

Originally published in Naples in 1573, the book was later re-issued without maps in 1576 in Venice, with a slighly revised title. The book was re-issued in 1582 with entirely different maps. Of the 7 known surviving examples of the 1573 edition, only 2 examples include maps (Palacio Real in Madrid and private collection of dr. Fritz Hellwich in Germany).

OCLC records one separate copy of this map, in the National Library of Spain, although it appears from its description to be bound into the book.
