Description

Detailed early map of San Diego with a large inset map of La Jolla.

The map shows Fort Rosecrans, the US Naval Air Station, the Naval Fuel Depot, US Marine Corps Base and US Naval Training Station. Mission Beach is subdivided (1915), and the bridge across the Mission Bay Channel, connecting Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach, has been constructed.

Dating

The map shows Linda Vista Road and the extensive street network of the government-constructed housing for military factory workers which were constructed beginning in 1939. Additionally, it shows the new interchange (at F-6) between the Rosecrans bypass and highway 101 north of the Rosecrans/101/Taylor Street intersection, which was constructed in 1941-42. We would not date the map later than 1944 as there is no street system showing the Frontier government housing constructed during WWII where the present Sports Arena sits.
