Description

Important regional map prepared during the time of the Constitutional Monarchy in France, being one of the earliest printed maps to depict the modern Departments of the Republic of France.

The modern French Departments were created on March 4, 1790 by the National Constituent Assembly (the Assembly lasted from July 9, 1789 to September 30, 1791). With additions, the same departments remain in effect until today.

The map is surmounted by a sun with "La Nation, La Loi et le Roi" in the center (The Nation, The Law, The King), with the Bastille at the bottom left, in the process of being destroyed, with a winged angel to the right, engraving the laws of the land in stone.

Prepared at the direction of French National Assembly, it is a fine representation of the newly formed departments, shortly after the creation of the brief lived Constitutional Monarchy.
