Description

Fascinating map depicting the major lakes of New Zealand by Keith Lucas and published by the Royal Geographical Society.

Keith Lucas FRS (1879 - 1916) was a British scientist who worked at Trinity College, Cambridge doing pioneering work in Neuroscience. He was educated at Rugby School and Trinity College, Cambridge where he graduated BA with a first-class in Natural Sciences in 1901.

In 1902 he worked in New Zealand, on the bathymetrical survey of the lakes, for which this map was prepared. The map shows the following lakes:

  • Lake Taupo (1,211ft. above sea level). Scale, 1/200,000.
  • Lake Wakatipu (1,016ft., approximate above sea level).Scale, 1/200,000.
  • Lakes of the Middle Waikato. Scale, 1/100,000.
  • Lake Rotoiti (910 ft. approximate above sea level).
  • Lake Waikare Moaua (2,015 ft. above sea level). Scale, 1/100,000.
  • Lake Rotorua (915 ft. above sea level). Scale. 1/200.000.
  • Lake Manapouri (597ft. above sea level). Scale, 1/100,000.
