Description

Marvelous early map of the southern portion of the United States, extending from the confluence of the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers in what was then Illinois Company land, south along the Misssissippi to the Little Yazoo and Ste. Reine.

In the south, the map reaches Mobile and Pensacola Bays, the Ouaquaphogaw Swamp (source of the St. Mary's River) and Amelia Island and the mouth of the St. Johns River. In the North, the map reaches Delaware Bay , the Seven Ranges and Old Musquiton Fort. One of the most interesting features of the map is the many early land companys shown, including Illinois Company, New Jersey Company, Wabash Company, Ohio Company and others. There are other regions granted to Revolutionary War veterans noted as Army Lands north of the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, and the regions noted as Colonel Simmes and Donation Lands from the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The southwestern portion of the map is dominated by Chickasaws and Chactaws territories, with extensive notes on their various villages and a few fortss along the Mississippi River, includined the Old fort at Kappas, Fort Assumption, Ancient Fort at Prudhomme, Ft. Chartres etc. A number of the French settlements on the Mississippi appear. The rest of the map includes notes on towns, rivers, forts and other interesting post Revolutionary War details.
