Description

While the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo occurred on February 2, 1848, the news did not reach Brigadier General Sterling Price in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Price moved on a Mexican force deep into neighboring Chihuahua.  Mexican Governor Angel Trías advised Price that a peace treaty had been signed, but Price continued after Trías' small force until reaching the town of Santa Cruz de Rosales. Still unaware that the war had ended, Price ordered an artillery bombardment (see cannons noted by symbols denoted by key at upper right) on March 16, 1848, then launched a three-pronged assault (as seen by the dotted lines and arrows on the map).

Trías surrendered around dusk after Price's men had fought their way to the Main Plaza (letter b).
