Lively caricature of the history of Salem in birdseye view style, showing important public buildings, businesses, schools, places of worship, and residences. The map is embellished with numerous pictorial vignettes and historical notes, ship's figureheads adorning the cartouche, and a decorative geometric border. The vignettes reflect Salem's long and varied history, placing particular emphasis on the early colonial period, the mercantile activities of the late 18th and 19th centuries, and important historical and literary figures associated with the town. There are numerous touches of whimsy, including bad poetry, a vignette of a witch on a broom with the note "Aviation started in Salem," and mermaids in the North River.
Alva Scott Garfield was an artist active in the 1950s and 60s, based in Concord, Mass. and Madison, New Hampshire. She produced quite a few pictorial maps of areas with rich historical associations, including Boston, Concord, Harvard University, and the White Mountains.
