Fine early map of the Carolinas, among the earliest obtainable printed maps of the Carolinas.
Seller's map appeared in his Atlas Maritimus, first published in 1682, with a variant state with an oval cartouche appearing Samuel Wilson's An Account of the Province of Carolina in America, both published in 1682.
While Cumming surmised that the map was based upon Speed's rare map of the Carolinas (1676), Burden more accurately describes the map as derived from the Ogilby-Moxon map of 1673, commonly known as the First Lord Proprietor's Map. A copy of the map can be seen here: /gallery/detail/31036
This first edition of the map is very rare on the market and is much rarer than Speed's miniature map. No examples of the map have appeared in AMPR in the past 30 years.
