Description

Rare promotional map on a combination plat map and birdseye view projection, showing the community of San Antonio Heights, in the northern part of what is today Upland, California, as subdivided by the Ontario Land and Improvement Company in 1887.

The map names the property manager (G. Frankish) and includes manuscript annotations of the approximate elevations of a number of the lots, with the name written J.F.Fredendall next to the elevations.

This is almost certainly the original promotional map for the subdivision, as surveyed by Taylor and Kluegel in 1887. The map shows a series of curved streets, a Hotel Park and individual lots for sale. As the subdivision transitions into the mountains, the subdivision is superimposed over increasingly mountainous topographical imagery, ultimately showing more of a birdseye view format.

The map is oriented as a view of the San Gabriel Mountains from the South. Mt. San Antonio (also Mt. Baldy) and Mt. Ontario are shown, with elevations. Of historical interest, the Ontario Canal is shown at the northwest corner of the map. The actual configuration of the community is almost exactly the same as shown in this view, an unusual feature for early Southern California Subdivisions.

The map promotes the community's access to Electric Rail access to the Southern Pacific RR and San Fe RR in Ontario, twenty minutes ride from San Antonio Heights.
