Description

Fine example of the central section of Paolo Ligozzi's extremely rare view of Verona, published in Verona in 1620 and engraved by Francesco Valegio.

Ligozzi's view is one of the first great early views of Verona and one of the rarest. The view is centered on the the Coliseum and the Piazza della Erbe and includes the motto and seal of Verona at the top center.

Ligozzi's view is an important early source of infomration regarding the appearance of Verona at the beginning of the 17th Century. The view pre-dates 1630, the year of construction of the Chiesa delle Stimmate. Although a few blocks of downtown are not illustrated, and many buildings are depicted in an incomplete fashion, it is a remarkably accurate depiction.

The axis of the map runs from Castelvecchio to via Pallone, Via Roma and Piazza Bra.
