Description

Nice example of the Hibernian Magazine edition of this fine early plan of the American lines at the Siege of Boston, one of the earliest battle plans of the American Revolution, having been published only a few months after the battle if Bunker Hill in June 1775.

The map depicts the British fortifications at the entrance to Boston Neck in the Summer of 1775, along what would become Washington Street. Includes 2 lines of fortifications, gun emplacements, etc.

The map is based upon Robert Aitken's plan, which appeared in the Pennsylvania Magazine in August 1775, which was then edited by Thomas Paine. It was the third Battle Plan of the American Revolution, predated only by two smaller maps of Boston which appeared in the months prior to this map. The map locates the Bomb Battery, 25 men "Blinds", the salt marshes, the stockade line, and more. The original text page from the magazine (page 667) "References to the Plan of Gen. Gage's Lines" is included with this lot. The page bears a note referring to the map "This is a true state this day, July 31, 1775." It also contains a list of 30 references to the plate locating 29 guns (e.g. "12-pound Cannon 60 round shot lying to each") and the Gate and draw-bridge. The fortifications and entrenchments are well shown.

The Hibernian Magazine or Compendium of Entertaining Knowledge . . . was published in Dublin by Tomas Walker.
