Description

Early example of this famous map, which includes California as an Island, one Great Lake, conjectural Northwest Passage, Straits on Anian, and rich illustration in the interior of North And South America, along with nearly a dozen ships at sea and a striking cartouche. California appears in the Briggs model, unlike later copies of the map by DeWit and others, who used the Sanson Model. This map is an early map of its genre, preceded only by Visscher. Repaired tear above the cartouche, otherwise an attractive example. McLaughlin 53.
