Description

Fine early map of the route of the Union Pacific, illustrating a travel account by a German professor who made the journey west on the Union Pacific the day after its opening.

The map is one of the earliest published maps of the Union Pacific following its completion and is noteworthy for locating the many stops in the west at its initial outset, including many early mining towns which are no longer on the map. The White Pine Mining District in Nevada is also located, as are a number of feeder lines in California and in the east.

Offered here with an extensive mileage table, showing the distances to the primary destinations in the west, including several Nevada boom towns.

The book was published by Eduard Heinr. Mayer in Cologne and Leipzig and by Schmidt in New York in 1870. The book consists of approximately 210 pages, with illustrations, an engraved frontis, woodcuts, lithographic folding map and folding table. 12mo.

Originally published as a series of articles for a German periodical, Schlagintweit, who was a well known scientist, researcher, professor, traveled the Union Pacific route on the day following its opening, and numerous times afterward. Schlagintweit provides a detailed account which at the time was perhaps the most knowledgeable work on the subject in any language.
