Description
Fine early map of the Old Northwest, engraved to illustrate Birkbeck's Journal.
The map includes a depiction of Illinois Territory, pushed far off Lake Michigan by a pervasive error which appeared on a number of maps of this period. Chicago is not yet shown, although the Old Peorias Village appears, as does Soutouv Village and Lower Iowa.
The vast majority of the land is divided into Territories, with the name Northwest Territory appearing. Several early roads are shown. Ft. Defiance, Ft. Wayne, Ft. Recovery, Ft. Jefferson, Ft. Lawrence, and a handful of early towns are named, along with some Indian Villages.
