Fine early map of the Island of Formosa (Taiwan) and the Pescadore Islands (Penghu), published by Vander Aa in Leiden in his Galerie Agréable du Monde, a sixty-six volume atlas complied in 1729 and said to have been issued in an edition of 100 copies.
The map is oriented with east at the top and shows extensive sounding and nautical details.
Beginning in 1627, the southwest part of Taiwan was controlled by the Dutch, who established Fort Zeelandia as a trading base.
There are very few separate maps of Taiwan, this being one of the earliest.
Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) was a Dutch mapmaker and publisher who printed pirated editions of foreign bestsellers and illustrated books, but is best known for his voluminous output of maps and atlases. Van der Aa was born to a German stonecutter from Holstein. Interestingly, all three van der Aa sons came to be involved in the printing business. Hildebrand was a copper engraver and Boudewyn was a printer.
