Description

Fascinating map of Serena By The Sea, located between Carpinteria and Santa Barbara at the mouth of Toro Canyon on the Pacific Ocean.

It would appear that little if anything became of the town of Serena By The Sea. The proposed seaside community, as set forth in this map, does not appear to have been built.

The map shows a railroad line in the north, a Serena Train Station and Railroad Spur, a Commercial and Pleasure Wharf, Storage House, Reservoir, town plan with streets, bridge, and other details. Both the high tide and low tide lines are shown and existing survey stakes are also shown.

The map provides a highly detailed survey of the proposed community, which was quite possibly a community being planned by the Southern Pacific Railroad on its rail line from Ventura and Oxnard to Santa Barbara.

We were unable to find any information or local history for Serena. There remains a Serena Avenue and Serena Road immediately east of Toro Canyon Road off of Highway 101, but it appears that none of the proposed streets on this map were ever constructed.

This is quite possibly the only known example of a map of Serena By The Sea.
