Description

Rare separately issued map of Verano, California, quite probably the earliest printed promotional map of the town of El; Verano, with a series of decorative vignettes surrounding the map showing scenes from around the town.

Located at the confluence of Sonoma Creek and Agua Caliente Creek, the map shows the location of Sonoma Valley Railway and Train Station which was responsible for the creation of the town, along with the Hotel Verano, Manzanita Park, the Hot Sulphur Baths, Acorn Park and the first lots in the original subdivision. An Artisian Well is shown south of the train station and the line of the Santa Rosa and Carquinez Railway is shown on the far side of Sonoma Creek, which is traversed by a bridge at the south end of town.

The map is surrounded by views, including View across the Rancho Agua Caliente, Lachryma Montis, the home of General Vallejo, etc. The plan of Verano notes that it was prepared by P.R. Davis, the County Surveyor of Sonoma.

El Verano is an unincorporated community west of the City of Sonoma. The town as established in 1888 when a new depot was built two miles west of Sonoma by George H. Maxwell. The town was closed down when Maxwell was unable to not able to provide title guarantees to buyers.

Despite the title issue, the town grew as a popular resort destination. A post office was established in 1889.
