Description

Detailed map of the El Cajon Valley, covering a large portion of the El Cajon Rancho, showing 24 subdivisions established between 1876 and 1906.

The map covers the City of El Cajon, along with all or part of Santee, La Mesa, Spring Valley, Bostonia, Winter Gardens, Lakeside and Fanita Ranch, at a time prior to any significant development of the region. The map provides in fine detail the regional subdivsions, lot sizes, roads and other improvements in the El Cajon Valley, east of San Diego.

Published by San Diego mapmaker Rodney Stokes, the map was used by engineers at the Southern Pacific Railroad to plot the location of several projected light rail lines, including the Lemon Grove & Cowley Line and the a line from Santee to Lemon Grove. In red, the LB Harris B Line is shown, attaching itself to the main railroad line through the valley, the San Diego, Cuyamaca and Eastern R.R.

The annotations in red, green and yellow were added shortly after the publication of the map, with the last dated 1909.

The map is exceptionally rare. We have located no institutional examples.
