Description

Fine early map of Villa Park, in the Barnum part of Denver, published by the Villa Park Association, showing land owned by PT Barnum and his daughter.

Map shows proposed streets, (not named), parks, creeks, small bodies of water, and plan of lots. Officers and directors of the association are listed. Includes an inset map of the City of Denver showing the situation of Villa Park.

Phineas Taylor (PT) Barnum, the American showman, promoter, politicion and businessman had significant ties to Denver. Among these interests was his ownership of Villa Park. The property was ultimately used by his daughter Hellen, and her husband Wiliam, where they ran a tuberculosis house called Prospect Villa Park. The property was renamed the P.T. Barnum Subdivision of Denver in 1881, and Barnum transferred his holdings to Helen in 1884. Today's Barnum and Barnum West neighborhoods began to take shape in 1887, when incorporation papers were filed.

The map and pamphlet are very rare. We located one example at the DPL (damaged, with loss of image), which was apparently lacking the pamphlet.
