Description

Scarce map of the State of Ohio and one of the best obtainable large format maps of Ohio, from Caleb Atwater's Description of the Antiquities Discovered in the State of Ohio…, Volume I of the American Antiquarian Society's Archaeologia Americana, published in 1820.

The map brought together the works of John Kilbourne of Columbus (author of the Ohio Gazetteer or Topographical Dictionary), Ohio's first great indigenous author of geographical publications, and Alexander Bourne, another early map maker of Ohio.

The map shows 70 counties, the major roads and the most important settlements in each county. Of particular note are the clear topographical details, including the Black Swamp of Northwestern Ohio and the Unbroken Sandstone Region in Southeastern Ohio. It is also important as the map used to illustrate Atwater's classic description of the western antiquities, the first systematic study of the prehistoric Indians in North America. The collaboration of Bourne and Kilbourne, two of Ohio's leading early 19th Century map makers, is also significant.
