Detailed map of the progress of the Compagnie Universelle Du Canal Interoceanique De Panama in its effort to construct the Panama Canal.
The French commenced work on the canal in the early 1880s. This map shows a snapshot of the construction as of June 1885, under the direction of Ferdinand de Lesseps. Work continued on the canal under various French ownership groups until 1898, when the project was "sold" the the United States.
