Description

Fine wide margined example of the first state of Stieler's map of the United States. Includes a wonderful conjectural depiction of the West, incluidng a tentative river from Salt Lake to San Francisco Bay. The renditions of Lakes Timpanagos and Tegujo, are particularly interesting, as it is the Northern of the two lakes which will prove to be mythical. A note on the western shore of Tegujo indicates that it this shore is unknown. Oregon Territory includes a 54-40 or fight border with British America, and clearly reflects the discoveries of Lewis & Clark in the prior decade. The mapping of the Upper Missouri is quite detailed for the period, with many Indian Names. Arkansas is in a double wide configuration. Michigan Territory is oddly misshaped, truncating the bottom of the NW Territory. Many Indian Tribes are named throughout. An excellent early map of the US, at a time when coast to coast maps were quite scarce.
