Description

Fine early plan of Macquarie Harbor, in the western part of Tasmania, the earliest separate plan of the Harbor, with soundings in its entrances and within the harbor, which appeared in Duperrey's Voyage autour du Monde . . . in 1827.

The description of Evans given in the title of the map is incorrect. Evans had been acting Surveyor-General in New South Wales from 1803 to 1850 and was papointed Assistant Surveyor at Port Dalrymple (Georgetown, not Hobart) in 1809, Deputy Surveyor of Lands in Van Diemen's Land in 1810 and Deputy Surveyor of Lands (in both Colonies) in 1812. However, except for a period between 1812 and 1813, Evans did not reside in Hobart until 1818.

The entrance to Macqaurie Harbor was charted by P.P. King in 1819. The harbor itself and part of Gordon River were surveyed by George William Evans in 1822 and hs chart was incorporated in the 1826 issue of the Hydrographical Office's "Chart of Van Diemen's Land." However, a separate plan was not issued by the Hydrographic Office unti 1845.
