Description

Fine early view by Alexander Robertson of the Hudson River in America, published by Francis Jukes in London.

In 1652 Thomas Chambers bought land bordering the Hudson River from the Esopus Indians (the area is now known as Kingston). The land was developed and became important for the Dutch Fur Trade, this is possibly the area depicted in this print and named 'Chambers Creek'. '

The Hudson River is named after English explorer Henry Hudson who first navigated it in 1609 whilst looking for a passage to China. The river became an important waterway for English, Dutch and French colonists.
