Description

Striking large format map of North America by Monin, which includes a series of contemporary annotations showing the various routes to San Francisco via Cape Horn and Panama, most likely in preparation for a commercial map advertising routes to the Gold Regions of California or some similar purpose.

The map show includes cartographic detail from the mid-1840s, including Texas in its Republic Configuration (although the boundary is not colored, the dashed line is present), Russian America, the Mandan, Osage, Sioux, Huron and Ozark Districts, Northwest Territory, Arkansas Territory, Michigan Territory, and other early features.

Upper California includes a number of the great mythical rivers, streching from the Great Salt Lakes (both of them!) and other points well east of the Sierras. Gila is shown emptying into the Gulf of California. Nice detail in the Pacific Northwest. Single Cordillera Rocky Mountains, after Humboldt. Nice Coastal detail on the West Coast.

Annotated maps showing information such as routes to the California Gold Regions rarely appear on the market.
