Description

Fascinating view from of an encampment on a tributary of the Missouri, prepared as part of the United States survey for the most practicable route for a railroad line to the West Coast of America, conducted just prior to the Civil War.

After exiting the Red River basin, the expedition came to the Shyenne River. Here the party began to experience the wealth of game on the Missouri Plains first made famous by the observations fifty years earlier by Lewis and Clark. Stevens saw his first few bison and a gang of elk, the latter hounded by a pack of wolves.
