Description

Rare map of the southeastern part of Pacific Beach, showing an area which is now primarily the Mission Bay Public Golf Course.

At first glance, the map is somewhat disorienting, employing only a few street names that currently exist and with the Grand Avenue located on the map being in fact a different street.

At the top, Grand Avenue is an approximation of Garnet Avenue, near the intersection of Mission Bay Drive. With the curve of the Los Angeles & San Diego Beach Railway, Grand continues on a course of the current Mission Bay Drive, until it intersects with Ivy Avenue (which is the modern Grand Avenue).

Among the streets named, Figueroa, Magnolia and Hornblend are shown relatively accurately, although beginnng at Pico, the curve to the south never occurs, an area which would remain the Rose Inlet (creek) wetlands. None of the lots west of Pico were built and there is no sign of the Rose Inlet--perhaps the developer was unable to persuade the city to allow him to plow over the wetlands area.

The area south of Ivy and bounded by Pico, West End Street and Pacific Avenue is the location of Mission Bay High School.

A perfect example of a Southern California land speculator's dreams gone unrealized.
