Nice example of Mather's map of Long Island and neighboring regions, based upon the survey work of a young Calvin Smith.
Mathe's map is one of the most detailed and attractive large format maps of Long Island to appear in the 19th Century. The map extends from New Jersey and Staten Island to Montauk and Fisher's Island, capturing Long Island in superb detail on the eve of its land boom.
The map ncludes parts of Westchester, New Jersey, Rockland County, and the Connecticut Coast. A large inset map shows the geology and topography topography of Manhatta. The partially completed Long Island Railroad is shown, as are East Hampton, Bridgehampton, Southampton, Amaganset, Riverhead, and Sag Harbor, among others.
One of the best obtainable maps of Long Island published prior to the Civil War.
